An exceptional Victorian Mano Cornuto charm, hand carved from natural Mediterranean coral and mounted in acid-tested 14k gold, with a small turquoise accent.

Dating from the late 19th century and sourced from a private Italian collection, this remarkable amulet embodies centuries of Mediterranean folklore. The Mano Cornuto (Horned Hand), or Sign of the Horns, has been worn since Roman times as a protective talisman, believed to ward off the malocchio (evil eye), repel misfortune and bring strength, luck and protection.

A particularly appealing feature is the pair of 14k gold rings fitted to the two extended fingers. These were almost certainly added during the charm's lifetime to reinforce or repair fingers that had become damaged, a sympathetic period repair often encountered on antique coral mano charms, whose delicate projecting fingers were especially vulnerable. Rather than detracting from the piece, these historic additions enhance its authenticity and tell part of its long journey.

The charm has not been cleaned or polished and is offered exactly as acquired. It displays the gentle wear, natural patina and age-related marks expected from a genuine antique, adding warmth and character that simply cannot be replicated.
