A marvellous and rare Victorian carved natural Coral depicting a Horned Hand.
Antique mediterranean red/orange carved Coral - Horned Hand symbol (sign of the horns), mounted on a gorgeous articulated 16k gold base. No hallmark - acid tested positive as 16k gold.
This beautiful and delicate late 19th century Mano Cornuta is exactly as it was originally acquired from a private collector in Italy. It is in good antique/used condition with the usual small signs of ageing, the coral has an uneven aged/used natural quality to it (antique items are almost always pre-worn and will typically have some level of wear). Please refer to images for condition and further details.
The hand measures approximately 4.9 cm (including bail) by 1 cm and it weighs approximately 3.1 grams.
The chain on image 8 is just used as a reference.
There was a time when coral horned hands could be found relatively ease but now, they’re exceptionally rare, making this piece a true collector’s gem.
“Horned Hand amulet, Corsica Mano cornuta, or ‘horned hand’ amulets are thought to be of ancient Italian origin and are worn as protection against the harmful glance of the Evil Eye. Mano cornuta is one of two hand gestures that are commonly used for this purpose, the second being the mano fica, or ‘figa hand’.”
