A rare and evocative Memento Mori pin from Naples, featuring a finely carved skull mounted on an elegant 9k gold pin.
Acquired in Naples from an antique dealer, this Victorian beauty is one of a kind.
The skull, likely carved from bone, a material often used in Neapolitan devotional and symbolic jewellery measures approximately 1.2 × 0.7 cm and shows the surface character expected from an antique piece. Please refer to images. The pin itself is 8.2 cm long and the total weight is approximately 3.8 g (acid-tested positive for 9k gold).
An uncommon survivor from a tradition rich in symbolism, designed to remind the wearer of life’s fragility and the value of each moment. This is a truly extraordinary piece of jewellery.
Memento mori (Latin: "remember that you have to die") is the medieval Latin Christian theory and practice of reflection on mortality, especially as a means of considering the vanity of earthly life and the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits.
