An unusual antique hand pendant carved from bone and fitted with warm gold-tone metal details. Suspended from the twisted ring is a charming Saint Lucy’s Eye ex-voto, adding another layer of symbolism to this fascinating piece.
The fist, together with the figa (mano fico) is one of the oldest protective amulets of Southern Europe and Latin America, traditionally worn to ward off the evil eye and attract good fortune. The Saint Lucy eye, associated with protection and vision, makes a particularly fitting companion to this powerful folk talisman.
Over many years, the bone has developed a wonderful aged surface with rich cream, honey and green tones. The subtle green coloration around the nails is the result of a natural reaction between the metal fittings and the organic material, a feature often appreciated by collectors as evidence of genuine age and authenticity. Rather than hiding the passage of time, this piece wears it beautifully.
More than simply jewellery, it feels like a small survivor of an older world of devotion, superstition and protection.
