Antique Christ Mocked Painting on Tin Metal Panel, Ex Voto Religious Folk Art, 1891 Sacred Heart Icon, Primitive Catholic Devotional Art

A deeply moving antique devotional painting on metal, depicting Christ during the Passion, crowned with thorns, draped in a crimson robe and holding the reed sceptre associated with the Mocking of Christ (“Ecce Homo” imagery).

Rendered in a wonderfully direct and humble folk style, the work carries the emotional intensity often found in Latin American and Southern European devotional art of the 18th–19th century. The inscription and date visible near the lower edge appear to read “S. de Justo…” followed by 1891, suggesting a late 19th-century devotional commission or ex-voto piece.

Painted on a thin metal sheet rather than canvas or wood, it has an extraordinary presence, quiet, raw and timeworn in the most compelling way. The worn surface, oxidised areas and losses to the paint have created an almost fresco-like texture over time, giving the image a haunting atmosphere impossible to reproduce artificially.
