Powerful German painting of the 18th century, representing an Ex Voto dated 1733.
The painting is depicting Saint Benedict seating on a carpet of clouds, holding a Holy Rule with his right hand and a Crosier with his left. On the bottom right of the painting there is a Benedict monk kneeling on the top of a pedestal with the words EX VOTO 1733 inscribed on its front. The Holy Mary is standing with her signature blue cloak and red underneath dress (while the blue represents the Virgin's purity, and connotes her royal status, the red garment signifies traits connected with motherhood, including love, passion, and devotion). Two cows on the left of the painting and the crucified Christ placed at the centre of the painting against a landscape background. Jesus is depicted bleeding with a shining holy light halo behind him.
A South German Ex Voto painting praising a divine intervention and with all the traditional qualities of folk art.
Oil on thin wood/panel in good antique/used condition with the usual craquelé and paint chips, related to its age. It has been restored and retouched sometime recently and the back of it has been painted with a matt smooth finishing.
It has a wooden frame with an obscure name inscribed on it (see pic 9).

It measures approximately with frame 48.5 cm x 58.5 cm x 2.6 cm.
