A beautifully worn antique Italian cornicello pendant carved from natural Mediterranean orange coral and mounted in an acid-tested 9k gold cap and bail.
Likely dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, this little horn charm carries the unmistakable warmth and character of old Italian devotional and protective jewellery. The elongated curved shape follows the traditional corno or cornicello form, a centuries-old Neapolitan talisman believed to protect against the evil eye, attract good fortune and encourage strength, fertility and prosperity.
The rich salmon-orange coral has developed a wonderfully soft surface with age, while the gold mount shows a beautifully timeworn patina and irregular handmade finish, adding to its authentic antique charm rather than detracting from it. The absence of hallmarks is not unusual on small Italian devotional charms and regional jewellery of this type, especially pieces originally made for local wear rather than formal export.
In good antique condition with gentle age-related wear, tiny organic surface marks to the coral and pleasing distress to the gold casing consistent with genuine age and use. Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
Measurements approx:
• 3.8 cm including bail
• 0.6 cm wide
• Weight: approx 2g
The chain on image 6 is just used as a reference.
A striking little talisman with real warmth, history and symbolism.
