Antique large low grade silver articulated fish.
Primitively designed, this Victorian large double sided fish is from Colonial Portuguese origins (19th century Bahia - a center of sugarcane cultivation from the 16th to the 19th centuries - Brazil)
The silver has no hallmark - acid tested positive as low grade silver.
Embellished with a naive design typical of the *Balangandans and Charms of Bahia.
The fish is in good antique condition with the usual small signs of ageing (antique items are almost always pre-worn and will typically have some level of wear). Please refer to images for condition and further details. Large, it measures approximately 15 cm high (including bail) by 5 cm wide and it weighs approximately 15.8 grams.
Please note the fish itself is sold without a chain.
Kindly check my policies regarding returns, exchanges, and shipping specifics. Making a purchase means you agree to these policies, so please familiarize yourself before you make your purchase.
Thank you!
*”Balangandans were made of gold and silver between the 17th and 19th century Colonial Brazil and had a direct relationship to status and wealth. Originally from both Christian and African symbols, Balangandans were worn by freed slaves and the jewellery pieces were negotiated by the African women themselves. They controlled their image and status using these objects, which also included fine earrings, bracelets, necklaces, figas and rings of gold.”
