An exceptional antique Victorian Figa hand pendant, beautifully carved from bone and embellished with finely detailed 14k gold fittings, gold nails and a charming coral-set finial.

The figa (or mano fico) is one of the oldest protective amulets in Europe and the Mediterranean world. Traditionally worn to ward off the evil eye and attract good fortune, these hand charms have been treasured for centuries in Portugal, Italy, Spain and Brazil.

This example is particularly appealing for its elegant proportions and unusual level of detail. The carved bone hand is mounted with ornate gold fittings, complete with individually applied gold nails and a decorative gold case. A small coral terminal adds a subtle touch of colour while reinforcing the amulet’s traditional protective symbolism.

The pendant is unhallmarked, which is not uncommon for pieces of this age and type, and the gold has tested positive as 14k gold.
