Antique Victorian Coral Figa Hand Pendant, 9K Gold Fist Lucky Charm, Talismans, Mediterranean Amulet

A wonderfully unusual Victorian coral fist pendant, full of movement, symbolism and unmistakable antique character.

Dating from the late 19th century, the pendant features a hand-carved natural coral fist mounted beneath a 9k gold cap. The hand holds a 9k gold bar from which seven miniature coral charms hang, including a carved head (Jester), rounded cabochon, coral branch, miniature figa, basket, bead and an intriguing cornicello or creature-like carving.

The figa, or mano fico, has long been worn throughout the Mediterranean as a protective talisman against misfortune and the evil eye. Here, surrounded by seven individual charms, it feels like a miniature collection of good-luck symbols gathered into one remarkable pendant.

Two of the carved fingers appear to have been lost long ago. The affected areas have become completely smooth and softly mellowed with time, with no sharp or recent-looking edges. This beautifully settled wear forms part of the pendant’s journey and gives it the unmistakable presence of an object that has survived for well over a century.

The coral and gold components show further gentle surface wear consistent with their age. Please examine all photographs carefully, particularly the close-up images, as they form an important part of the condition description.
