Vintage 18k Gold Stag Beetle Horn Charm: Cyclommatus Metallifer Insect

This is another vintage pendant fashioned from a natural stag beetle horn, mounted in an 18k gold cap. Although it bears no hallmarks, it has tested positive for 18k gold by acid test.

A striking and rather unusual mid-century piece, this scarab beetle mandible measures approximately 2.5 cm in length, or 2.9 cm including the bail, and weighs around 1.25 grams.

It remains in good vintage condition, with light signs of age and wear that, to my mind, only enhance its character and charm. Vintage pieces are almost always pre-owned and will usually show some evidence of their history. Please refer to the photographs for condition and further detail.

The scarab carried profound symbolism in ancient Egyptian culture, where it was associated with immortality, rebirth, transformation and protection. In South America, beetle horn charms were also worn as talismans, particularly during the 18th and 19th centuries, when they were believed to ward off misfortune. By the 1950s and 1960s, charm bracelets adorned with such pendants had become fashionable once again across parts of South America.
